Water Facts (old version)

Many of us have had water around and available to us all of our lives. It's easy to take it for granted so we thought you might be interested in some "water" facts.

  • Water scarcity affects one in three people on every continent of the globe.
  • Roughly 70% of an adult's body is made up of water.
  • A person can live about a week without water.
  • Over 1.5 billion people do not have access to clean, safe water.
  • Almost 4 million people die each year from water related diseases. (2.8 million people live in Chicago)
  • A child dies of water born diseases about every 15 seconds (Look at the sweep hand on your watch)
  • Nearly 97% of the world's water is salty or otherwise undrinkable. Another 2% is locked in ice caps and glaciers. That leaves just 1% for all of humanity's needs - all its agricultural, residential, manufacturing, community, and personal needs.
  • If all the world's water were fit into a gallon jug, the fresh water available for us to use would equal only about one tablespoon.
  • $1 can supply a child in a developing nation water for a year.
